Greenhouse Rain Delay

Twice in a row we were thwarted by moisture trying to get the plastic up on the greenhouse. The tiniest bit of moisture on the ground would have made an absolute mess on the plastic, so we’ve had to punt for sunnier days. Cloudiness or rain can gum up the works sometimes.

So the end walls are up, the roll-up side wirelocks and wind shields are ready to go. The only major thing left here is the plastic. The seedlings are ready to go and waiting in the starter greenhouse.

For other things though the rain or cloudiness is an opportunity: bees and carrots have been able to move forward.

We’ve got a queen-less beehive on our hands. The cloudiness and rain days provided a perfect time to combine the two hives. No sun, raining = no flying days for bees. The one queen-rite hive has been very busy, laying eggs, full frames of brood, and our Silver Maple tree was so full of bees you could stand under the tree and listen to them. So I didn’t want to interrupt the foraging with a hive combine. By the time it gets sunny again they should be combined and off to the races, and I’ll be waiting to split it into two again once they reach a swarming capacity.

Cool rainy and cloudy weather in April is also a great time to get early carrots in. For us this means we can get fresh carrots probably by the first week of July. Setting up some irrigation to keep the seeds moist for their 10-14 day germination period is also one more task off the spring list.

The starter greenhouse is more than half full already and we’ll be real busy within the next week.

Spring is an exciting time!
