Greenhouse Full + Crazy Weather

July temps in early May is a bit scary, so the weather has accelerated all of the goings-on at the farm and we’ve entered Ludicrous Speed mode. That might not be the greatest thing for our spinach and broccoli, but it has meant that we’ve fired everything into the new greenhouse and we are, finally, off to our first season with protected culture.

There’s definitely a feeling of “I have no idea what I’m doing here so I’m just going to trust that it’ll work out.” Those moments where you do something and while you’re doing it you are wondering if this is the moment where you are blissfully ignorantly walking into a self-inflicted disaster zone.

Are the spacings too close? Too far? Are we wasting our time with determinate tomatoes in a greenhouse? Can we keep up with trellising? Are we going to walk in here one day and wonder what we were thinking on this day, May 7th, 2025, when we first started planting in our new hoop house.

On the other hand, it feels pretty amazing to be planting tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in Winnipeg on May 7th, a comfy 3-4 weeks before final risk of frost is over (which seems absurd given the forecast). Next season we’re planning to be at this point by April 15th, now that we don’t have to do any more infrastructure work.

Just keeping in mind that the first-year learning curve plots real close to the X-axis.
