Global Fruit Companies

Today I’m sharing with you a short video that the algorithm put in front of my face, and I decided to watch it, and well, it was pretty good.

More Perfect Union in the US made a mini-mini-documentary/news piece entitled I Tracked Down the Company Ruining Fruit. In it, they examine why fruit at the grocery store is so….awful. 8 Million views and counting at the time I’m sharing this here.

I have no bones to pick with the video or the way it’s put together. It follows many other topics I’ve written about here on the blog. In many ways it is in sidestep with the book Tomatoland (which I don’t think I wrote a book review for here but maybe I did) but the super-coles-notes on Tomatoland is that nobody should be forcing Tomatoes to grow in Florida in winter, fumigating the soil, applying pesticides and fungicides on the reg while migrant workers pick unripened fruit in the fields, and adding a little modern slavery to it for good measure, all so that you can buy a tomato that might look like a tomato but is the culinary equivalent of Lucy pulling the football at the last second.

There is also little (or nothing) to justify the emissions and plastics involved in shipping tasteless fruits all over the world during out-of-season times.

Personally, I think there’s a lot of value to eating seasonally. And so when the time has come, there are many foods I will go without during the winter.

The best blueberry? Either the one you picked yourself, or the one from that local U-Pick farm. That will never change.
